About GroupWise@Home

GroupWise@Home has a long history, on this page we explain a bit more about the history and introduce all the wonderful Open Horizons community people that have contributed to this project. And if you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to mail us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Q: What is the GroupWise@Home Project?
A: The GroupWise@Home Project is a lot of different things, like The GroupWise@Home Project is a project that tries to make installation of the Novell GroupWise Windows Client work as simple as possible for a first time user of the program. The GroupWise@Home Project will remove dependencies of a Novell GroupWise postoffice, leaving the client as a stand-alone IMAP/POP3 client The GroupWise@Home Project will try and remove as much enterprice functionality as possible, leaving the client with only the needed stuff for working without a postoffice.

Q: Why did you create GroupWise@Home?
A: During the recent years the GroupWise client became stronger and stronger, as Novell has added more and more features. After GroupWise training people often asked if they can use such a great tool at home as well. Also, many GroupWise administrators would love to see that their colleagues would be able to use the same tools at home as well, taking away the confusion of having to explain the differences with other solutions. And finally, the GroupWise client is simple so strong - once you start using it, you will understand why the Open Horizons community decided to make this big step forward.

Q: When did you start with this project?
A: Well, we have been talking about this for many years, however in the Autumn of 2008 things became serious and we decided to create a project team and launch this as a serious project. At first we investigated different options to get started and then early 2009 we really got started. We had several developer meetings where we identified the steps-to-take after which our team started with the development of all sub-modules. For some of these extensions, we needed modifications in the code of the GroupWise client and all of our ideas where implemented in the Service Pack 1 of GroupWise 8. This SP1 came available just after the summer of 2009 and since then we have been testing and modifying. The Closed Beta became an Open Beta in december 2009, so here we are: GroupWise@Home is now available for the general public.

Q: What does GroupWise@Home cost?
A: The usage of the GroupWise client itself is free of charge, as Novell licensing scheme is based on GroupWise mailboxes which are part of a GroupWise PostOffice. The development costs of the GroupWise@Home extension are carried by the Open Horizons community and our developers and testers, who are all volunteers.

Q: Where do I get support for the GroupWise@Home client?
A: Since this is a freeware project which is based on a commercial product, you can not go to Novell for support. For any of the special GroupWise@Home features as well as other many features, volunteers
the Open Horizons community are willing to help out. More at www.mygwmail.net/support
